Description

Introduction: The principal and co-principal investigators conducted a comprehensive literature review (Appendix A) related to second victimhood for anesthesia providers and support for those victims. Albert Wu1 defined patients suffering from unexpected events as the first victims, which defined the providers engaged in the event as the second victims. Second victim events occur among healthcare professionals, including anesthesia providers like certified registered nurse anesthesiologists (CRNAs), anesthesiology assistants (AAs) and physician anesthesiologists significant short and long-term sequela occur without interventions, including nausea, panic, fear, shame, anxiety, depression, absenteeism, and post-traumatic stress disorder.2-19 Peer support among anesthesia providers proved popular and useful in studies following second victim events. When anesthesiologists talked about the traumatic experience, their peers helped normalize the situation. This normalization decreased negative short- and long-term sequela among anesthesia providers.2-19 A gap exists in the literature related to nurse anesthesia residents who experience traumatic events in the clinical setting. Nurse anesthesia residents maintain their registered nurse licensure throughout the doctoral program, including them in the healthcare profession. Second victim events can occur during an anesthetic provided by a nurse anesthesia resident, and this exposure creates a vulnerable population with no direct peers, who have experienced a second victim event, following an event. Because no direct peer support program exists for nurse anesthesia residents during clinical training, the principal and co-principal investigators planned to build a peer support program roadmap to apply to a nurse anesthesia education program.
