Description
In this evidence-based clinical review design, three researchers sought to answer the question: “Does the risk of maternal SSRI use warrant removal during pregnancy?”. This question was addressed by retrieval of 3 separate articles comprised of a meta-analysis and systematic review, whose data were subsequently extracted and analyzed in the context of the research question. Overall, a definitive association between SSRI use and birth defects could not be discerned with absolute certainty after a qualitative review. Given this conclusion, the decision of whether to continue or discontinue a known effective SSRI during pregnancy should be reached by thorough patient-provider communication.
