Description
Background: Hypertension is a chronic medical condition that affects millions worldwide. It is the leading cause of cardiovascular disease and is a leading modifiable risk factor for premature morbidity and mortality. Currently, the American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association or the Joint National Committee hypertension guidelines are widely accepted and are used in the management of hypertension. Objective: To determine if treating hypertension based on the American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association or the Joint National Committee is superior in the prevention of cardiovascular disease such as myocardial infarctions, cerebrovascular accidents, and congestive heart failure. Methods: An evidence-based literature review was completed by reviewing databases which included PubMed, JAMA, and South College Library. The search terms included “hypertension guidelines AND improvement in cardiovascular health AND JNC vs ACC/AHA,” “ACC AND AHA AND cardiovascular AND JNC, “cardiovascular AND ACC/AHA AND JNC AND antihypertensives AND hypertension AND treatment, “JNC AND ACC/AHA guidelines,” “ACC/AHA Hypertension Guidelines”. The following limits were used: full text online, written in English, published between 2000- 2020, scholarly and peer-reviewed, open access, cardiovascular disease, and research. The study population had to have a cardiovascular outcome such as myocardial infarction, cerebrovascular accident, or congestive heart failure. Results: Four of the six review articles that were identified demonstrated that there may be a strong relationship between lowering blood pressure and a decrease in major cardiovascular diseases. The research also supports that controlling systolic blood pressure is more beneficial to prevent cardiovascular disease than diastolic blood pressure control. Finally, medical management has shown to be the cornerstone of hypertension, and it has the ability to decrease cardiovascular events. Conclusion: Through this research, it can be iv concluded that treating with ACC/AHA guidelines leads to a higher prevalence of hypertension. Through stricter control of blood pressure, there is a potential to decrease the prevalence of major cardiovascular events.
