Description
Background: In the United States, approximately one-third of adults are suffering from an insufficient amount of sleep. It has been shown that the amount of sleep a person obtains is directly correlated to many health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, and numerous others. Due to these serious health threats, it is important for a person to get the best quality and quantity of sleep they can receive. Purpose: This evidence-based clinical review (EBCR) sought to understand the efficacy of blue light glasses regarding the quality and quantity of sleep one might obtain from wearing them. Methods: Three independent researchers conducted an EBCR to synthesize published studies investigating the efficacy of blue light glasses on sleep. After an extensive search and review process, three studies of good quality were chosen for data extraction and analysis. The three studies included were a meta-analysis, a systematic review, and a randomized control trial all focused on improving sleep hygiene using blue light glasses or other various alterations in light exposure. Results: The analysis of the three studies yielded varying results over whether the addition of wearing blue light glasses had a positive effect on sleep hygiene. The results from this study supported that light alteration specifically had a greater effect on sleep duration and quality. Conclusion: The literature is inconclusive on the efficacy of wearing blue light-blocking glasses and their overall benefit for sleep quality and duration. Further randomized control trials on the effects of blue light glasses for the betterment of sleep health need to be conducted for a conclusive result.
