Description
The purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate the relationship between motivational need satisfaction and employee productivity and satisfaction in employees who work remotely and hybrid at least 10% of the time in New South Wales, Australia. For the utility of this study, motivational needs were generally defined as Maslow’s hierarchy of needs: physiological, safety, love and belonging, esteem, and self-actualization (Babula, 2022). This study fills gaps in previous research by identifying the relationship between motivational needs satisfaction in remote and hybrid workers, age, and size of household. The data set used for this study was acquired from the New South Wales 2021 remote working survey. The survey consisted of 1,512 participants from New South Wales, Australia who worked at least part of the time remotely. The independent variables for this study were the amount of time spent working remotely, size of household, and age. The dependent variables used for this study were relationship and collaboration, safety, autonomy, esteem, physiological needs, and productivity. The study used IBM's SSPS statistical package to calculate Cronbach’s Alpha and Spielman’s correlation ranking to determine the relationship between variables. The research question (RQ1) was: How does motivational need satisfaction correlate with performance and motivation among remote and hybrid workers? The research findings indicate a small negative statistically significant relationship between motivational needs satisfaction and productivity in remote and hybrid worker productivity. Self-actualization needs satisfaction represents the most significant finding. That finding is a small positive relationship between self-actualization and productivity across multiple demographics. The relationship between needs satisfaction and productivity in remote and hybrid workers who are primary caregivers must be further explored.
