Description
The most recent guidelines for the treatment of schizophrenia include not only antipsychotic regimens, but therapy. Therapy comes in the form of individual and family interventions. Current research for the cultural-adaptation of family interventions in the management of schizophrenia is limited. Therefore, this research aimed to assess the efficacy of culturally-adapted family interventions for schizophrenic patients compared to standard family intervention methods or treatment as usual. This evidence-based medicine systematic literature review (EBM-SR) identified twenty-five articles through searching three databases and were further narrowed to three articles following title and abstract review, inclusion and exclusion criteria, quality assessments, and data extraction to aide in qualitative analysis. Overall, the included studies found that culturally-adapted family intervention styles are more effective in the management of schizophrenia when it comes to symptomatology. Some limitations existed in the number of included studies, as well as the numerous variations of study designs. However, strengths exist in the multiple cultures examined and the inclusion of studies that were only of good quality. The final recommendation is to investigate the practicality of implementing culturally-adapted family interventions in the management of schizophrenia on a broader scale with mental health providers.
