Description
Anesthesia practice requires knowledge and training with high-risk medications and equipment. Preparation for surgery includes assessment of machinery, tools, and most importantly, the patient. An initial patient assessment stimulates the anesthesia provider to choose medications and techniques for safe and diligent care. Use of neuromuscular blockade is common in general anesthesia. This paper presents categorical identification of neuromuscular blockade reversal medications and their efficacy. As obesity rates rise, the risks associated with anesthesia pertaining to airway protection likewise increase. This paper formulates discussion of a difficult airway patient and the possible postoperative complications associated with residual neuromuscular blockade. Sugammadex is a well-known reversal drug that lacks formulary in surgical centers due to cost. A literature review was performed to collect and analyze evidence of the comparison of sugammadex and neostigmine for neuromuscular blockade reversal. The evidence is presented by themes, and further discussion concludes that sugammadex is a safe, effective, and affordable drug.
