Nonprofit Leaders' Investments in Human Capital: A Critical Theory Perspective

The purpose of this correlational quantitative study was to examine if a correlation exists between stakeholders’ influence and nonprofit leaders’ investments in human capital, specifically salaries and professional development, in southwestern Pennsylvania. Stakeholder salience theory, through a critical theory perspective, and the learning organization framework underpinned the study—filling the gap in the literature. The study’s correlational quantitative design incorporated regression analyses to examine variables in explanatory-response relationships. The study’s descripto-explanatory format included descriptive information to explain the variable correlation. Secondary data from the Bayer Center for Nonprofit Management at Robert Morris University reflected a bi-annual average of 172 participant organizations and 13,610 employees for the researched period. Two research questions supported the study’s purpose. The first research question (RQ1) was: To what extent did stakeholder funding types influence nonprofit CEO and program manager salaries from 2011 through 2021 in southwestern Pennsylvania?
