Description
The purpose of this quantitative, non-experimental, correlational design is to determine if there is a difference between average clinical hours and National Council Licensure Exam Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN) first-time pass rates by comparing Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) graduates and Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree (BSN) graduates in the state of California in 2021-2022. For the utility of this study, clinical training hours are generally defined as inperson training experiences that include direct patient care. The theoretical framework used for this study is Peplau’s theory of interpersonal relations in nursing. Secondary data from The California Board of Registered Nursing 2021-2022 Annual School Report Summary for PreLicensure Nursing Programs is used for this study. The participants in the survey are California pre-licensure nursing programs that submitted data from their program concerning their students and graduates. Nursing graduates who passed NCLEX-RN from these programs include (n=5,130) ADN prelicensure program graduates and (n=5,546) BSN prelicensure program graduates. The independent samples t-test, Cohen’s D test, and Levene’s test are used for statistical analysis. The results indicated there is a statistically significant difference between average clinical hours and the first-time National Council Licensure Exam Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN) pass rates of Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree (BSN) graduates, and there is a statistically significant difference between average clinical hours and the first-time National Council Licensure Exam Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN) pass rates of Associate Degree in Nursing (AND) graduates. More research is needed to investigate the number of in-person clinical hours needed to prepare a prelicensure graduate for the NGN NCLEX-RN.
