Description
Background: Chronic back pain is a common medical condition in the adult population that is traditionally treated with opioids. However, new research has suggested NSAIDs may be more effective and safer in managing chronic back pain. Purpose: This research sought to identify the preferable, efficacious, and safer management of chronic back pain by identifying pain-related function, pain intensity, and adverse effects of opioids versus nonopioids. Methods: An evidence based clinical review (ECBR) was performed by three researchers who agreed upon specific terms, limits, exclusion criteria, and inclusion criteria. A quality assessment tool and discussion of procedures were utilized to evaluate internal validity and impartiality. Results: Nonopioid treatment in the management of chronic low back pain provided similar pain relief with minimal medication-related adverse outcomes in comparison to treatment with opioids. Conclusion: Nonopioids should be utilized over opioids for treatment of chronic low back pain due to similar therapeutic outcomes along with fewer medication-related side effects.
