Description

In recent decades, higher education has undergone a profound transformation with the increased enrollment of non-traditional students, representing a diverse cohort pursuing education later in life. The purpose of this comprehensive qualitative meta-analysis of existing literature is to meticulously examine the multifaceted challenges and barriers faced by nontraditional students, offering valuable insights to enhance student readiness, support systems, and resources for achieving academic success. The researcher employs a qualitative meta-analysis of existing literature, drawing on a vast array of scholarly works and empirical studies. Utilizing Braun and Clarkes Six-Step Framework, themes were extracted from the selected articles through a meticulously coding exercise to develop four main themes and various sub-themes across the literature which answered the primary research question: What are the challenges and barriers encountered by non-traditional students at the onset of a higher education program? The results of the study revealed four main themes: 1) Personal Challenges, 2) Social Challenges, 3) Institutional Barriers, and 4) Coping Mechanisms and Strategies.
