Description

Background: Plantar fasciitis (PF) is the most prevalent source of heel pain, contributing to a formidable cost of illness and affecting people from every age group, physical condition, and economic strata. Despite its ubiquitous impact on society, a gold standard treatment has yet to be set forth for this disease process. Current literature presents corticosteroid (CS) injections as an aged cornerstone of mildly invasive treatment with platelet rich plasma (PRP) more recently emerging on the treatment horizon as a competitive injection alternative. Purpose: The purpose of this research is to determine if a significant difference exists between CS or PRP, in the treatment of PF, in reference to pain, function, quality of life, and cost at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months. Methods: The researchers conducted a search of 4 major databases from January 2-14, 2023. Following group review, selection, and quality assessments, three studies were ultimately chosen, aligning with inclusion and exclusion criteria as well as the research question. Study populations and characteristics, intervention and comparison details, as well as outcomes for each study were recorded. Results: There was a statistically significant reduction in pain in 1 of 3 studies at 1 & 3 months in the PRP group compared to the CS group, then in 2 of 3 studies at 6 months, and likewise 2 of 2 studies at 12 months. A statistically significant increase in function among the PRP group compared to the CS group in 1 of 3 studies at 3 and 6 months and 2 studies at 12 months was found. vi Conclusion: The researchers conclude the findings align with current literature promoting CS for short term effects, whereas PRP is more effective for long term effects in relation to both pain and function. However, due to limitations in follow-up time as well as lack of information relating to quality of life and cost analysis, the researchers are unable to recommend a gold standard treatment guideline
