Description
Background: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is an unfavorable complication of general anesthesia that significantly impacts patients. Electrolyte disturbances, dehydration, hospitalization, decreased patient comfort, and poor satisfaction result in financial burdens on the healthcare system and the patients.1 Patients face PONV approximately 30% in the surgical population receiving general anesthesia and as high as 70-80% in high-risk patients.1,2 The most common factors influencing the prevalence of PONV include female gender, a non-smoker, postoperative opioid use, and a history of PONV or motion sickness.1 Additional factors such as ear, nose, and throat (ENT) surgeries, laparoscopic cases, breast-related procedures, length of surgery, and the use of volatile anesthetics have also been linked to producing PONV.3 Using a screening tool effectively improves patient outcomes to help decrease the incidence of PONV in the ambulatory surgical patient population. Anesthesia providers working in an outpatient setting can use the Apfel risk assessment tool to guide their provision of appropriate PONV prophylactic treatment.3
