Description

Introduction/Background: It stands to reason that many applicants to Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) programs are rejected due to various shortcomings or problems encountered during the application and interview process. There is little support for these candidates compared to other professional programs in the form of preparatory programs, mentoring, and advocacy relating to increasing application strength and applicant pool diversity. Barriers applicants face include the availability of resources that adequately prepare applicants, living locations that are remote or rural areas, racial/ethnicity/gender disparities, and knowledge of proper etiquette during the interview process. Preparatory programs can help prepare CRNA school applicants who, because of inadequacies that can be overcome, would otherwise not have the chance to do so. The significance of this problem reveals itself when conducting literature research on CRNA preparatory programs;only a handful of CRNA preparatory programs exist, and of these, only some have published peer-reviewed literature about their applicants' successful matriculation into CRNA programs. In 2023, the American Association of Nurse Anesthesiologists (AANA)1 reported that 83.9% of CRNAs surveyed classify themselves as White or Caucasian, leaving only 12.0% of CRNAs representative of minority populations (Asian/Pacific Islander, Hispanic/Latino, Black/African American, Native American/Alaskan Native, or Multiracial/Biracial) and an additional 4.1% of CRNAs preferring not to classify themselves. By successfully preparing potential candidates for application to CRNA school, the hope is to decrease the number of qualified applicants to the CRNA profession who are rejected. An extensive literature research was conducted to assess preparatory programs (Appendix A).
