Description
This systematic literature review investigates how adults undergoing surgery with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) experience perioperative management. It assesses the effectiveness of dexmedetomidine compared to traditional anesthetics in reducing emergence agitation (EA) and emergence delirium (ED) and improving postoperative PTSD symptoms and patient satisfaction. The review highlights the complex interplay of PTSD pathophysiology, anesthesia, and outcomes. It discusses pharmacological interventions, including dexmedetomidine, propofol, and ketamine, emphasizing the need for tailored approaches. Minimally invasive, pharmacological interventions such as stellate ganglion block (SGB) are also considered. The review pinpoints research gaps, stresses the importance of personalized care, and highlights the evolving landscape in the anesthetic management of PTSD patients.
