Description

Background: Research has shown that nail salons and the products utilized during nail procedures produce many volatile organic compounds that are linked with negative health effects. Objective: While we know nail salon technicians may have health effects from long-term exposure to nail salon chemicals, it has not been established if patron micro-exposures to the volatile organic compounds found in nail products can lead to any health effects. Methods: Research was conducted in two parts: a systematic review of compounds that were found in the salons and then a review of the documented health effects associated with the chemicals found in the first half of the research was conducted. Results: Of the chemicals reviewed formaldehyde was the only chemical above OSHA threshold however acetone, formaldehyde, methyl methacrylate, and toluene were all seen above documented health effect thresholds. Conclusion: Though many volatile organic compounds were seen in the research and were associated with negative health effects, there was not enough evidence or research in regards to negative impacts on patrons, only nail technicians. Further research is needed to determine if the micro-exposures that patrons sustain over years of nail appointments pose a risk to their health.
