Description

Background: Complementary and alternative medicines (CAMs), such as Vernonia cinerea, Scoparia dulcis, Fenugreek, Bitter melon, Berberine, and Salacia chinensis, have been studied for their antihyperglycemic properties. Due to the numerous CAMs available today, further research is warranted to identify which CAM, if any, could be viable monotherapy, or adjunct treatment, for patients with type two diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Objective: This paper focused on the effects of selected CAMs and their effect on glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and fasting blood glucose (FBG) in patients with T2DM. Methods: A systematic literature review utilizing several online databases was conducted to find the most relevant literature in the last decade. Results: Vernonia cinerea, Scoparia dulcis, Fenugreek, Bitter melon, Berberine, and Salacia chinensis were evaluated for their effectiveness in lowering FBG and HbA1c in patients with T2DM. Several of these CAMs were effective in reducing blood sugar values. Conclusion: Reductions in glycated hemoglobin A1c were observed in all of the selected CAMs. Vernonia Cinerea, Scoparia Dulcis, and Fenugreek showed comparable or superior efficacy to traditional medications in reducing glycated hemoglobin A1c and FBG.
