Description
Objective: To assess the efficacy of ChatGPT compared to traditional education methods in improving learning outcomes, clinical skill development, and patient comprehension in the health care sector. Methods: A systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was conducted with searches performed in Medline, PubMed, and Google Scholar. Peer-reviewed studies published within the last ten years, written in English, and rated as 'fair' or 'good' quality according to National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) tools were included. Results: ChatGPT did not significantly impact theoretical knowledge learning among trainees but did show significant improvements in clinical competencies, including clinical judgement, professionalism, and doctor-patient communication. In patient education, Chat-GPT-assisted interventions were associated with reduced preoperative anxiety and improved satisfaction. Concerns about misinformation, privacy, and potential bias were noted, however. Limitations across the studies included small sample sizes, lack of longitudinal follow-up, blinding, and heterogeneity in outcomes across studies. Conclusion: Current evidence suggests that ChatGPT can be an effective complementary tool in health care education, enhancing provider training and patient understanding when integrated alongside traditional methods. Continued research and the development of clear guidelines are necessary to ensure safe, ethical, and effective implementation of AI-based education tools in clinical practice.
