Description

The purpose of this capstone study will be to investigate the phenomenon of second language attrition for contracted U.S. government intelligence analysts at Peraton Labs and to identify the key components an educational-technology intervention must include to mitigate this skill decline. For the utility of this study, second language attrition will be generally defined as the measurable reduction in foreign language proficiency that occurs when analysts no longer engage in structured and sustained language use following intensive training. The theory guiding this study will be Self-Determination Theory, as it as it provides a framework for understanding how autonomy, competence, and relatedness influence the motivation required to maintain longterm engagement in language practice (Deci & Ryan, 1985). This directly aligns with the study’s focus on designing an intervention that supports continued proficiency. Data will be collected through pre- and post-intervention surveys and analyzed through a mixed-methods lens. Anticipated results of this study include maintained or improved post-intervention second language proficiency and positive feedback related to the educational technology intervention.
