Description
The purpose of this capstone study is to identify effective, school-based strategies to reduce chronic absenteeism among middle school students at Millwood Arts Academy Middle School. Chronic absenteeism, defined as missing 10% or more instructional days in a school year, remains a persistent problem that limits students’ access to instruction, engagement, and academic support. This study focuses on Millwood Arts Academy Middle School, a public charter school serving a diverse student population, many of whom face socioeconomic barriers that affect attendance. Guided by Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory, the study examines how individual, family, school, and community factors influence student attendance patterns. Using an action research design, data will be collected through interviews, focus groups, observations, and document reviews to identify barriers to attendance and effective interventions. Anticipated results include improved student attendance, increased engagement, and the development of sustainable, equity-centered attendance practices aligned with the school’s mission.
