Description

Operational empathy will serve as the guiding theoretical framework for this qualitative single case study. Operational empathy is defined as a leadership capacity in which leaders recognize, understand, and act on staff workflow experiences and organizational processes. The purpose of this study is to explore how healthcare leaders perceive and apply operational empathy within administrative settings. The central research question guiding this study is: How do healthcare leaders perceive and apply operational empathy within administrative healthcare environments? The study will take place within administrative departments that support both clinical and nonclinical operations, using a purposive sample of leaders responsible for business processes, regulatory functions, and staff oversight. Data will be collected through semi-structured interviews, document analysis, and reflexive journaling and analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. Anticipated findings are expected to show that leaders who actively integrate workflow awareness into their decisions demonstrate clearer communication, stronger alignment with staff needs, and improved collaboration across administrative teams. The study is also likely to reveal that operational empathy enhances leadership effectiveness by reducing misunderstandings, strengthening trust, and supporting organizational adaptability within complex healthcare environments.
